News websites are in freefall

In July, the biggest names in publishing reported dramatic traffic losses. The New York Times slipped 7 percent, CNN dropped 38 percent, Fox News lost 26 percent. Forbes was hit hardest with a 50 percent collapse. The Washington Post fell by 40 percent, while Daily Mail and HuffPost both lost 42 percent. Out of the top 50 news sites in the US, only six managed to grow.

This is not just a dip. It is a crisis. Readers are changing how they consume news, business models are under strain, and engagement is collapsing.

The message is clear. The era of easy traffic for publishers is over. Those who survive will be the ones who adapt quickly, find new distribution channels, and rebuild direct relationships with their audiences.
