Meta plans to cut 10% of its workforce (around 8,000 employees) starting May 20, as it shifts resources toward artificial intelligence.
The company will also cancel hiring for 6,000 open roles, according to an internal memo.
The layoffs are part of a broader effort led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to improve efficiency and strengthen Meta’s position in generative AI, where it trails competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
This move follows multiple earlier job cuts:
January: ~10% of metaverse-related staff, including about 1,000 in Reality Labs
March: Hundreds more across teams like Facebook, sales, and operations
Meta is also reducing reliance on contractors and increasingly using AI for tasks like content moderation.
The layoffs reflect a broader trend across tech, with companies like Microsoft and Amazon also cutting jobs or restructuring amid the AI boom.
Despite workforce reductions, Meta continues to invest heavily in AI, including launching new models and implementing internal tools to collect employee data to train AI systems.
