According to Axios, OpenAI is preparing to release GPT-5 in early or mid-August.
This new model will unify the GPT series with the more advanced “o3” reasoning model that’s currently used internally.
Key points:
– There will be multiple versions:
• GPT-5 (full model)
• GPT-5 Mini (lighter version for ChatGPT and API use)
• GPT-5 Nano (API-only, optimized for smaller devices)
– OpenAI also plans to release its first open-weight model since GPT-2, expected by late July. This will allow external developers to work with a version of its core technology outside the usual API.
– GPT-5 will not be AGI, but is expected to take a clear step forward in reasoning and reliability.
– Release timing may still shift depending on infrastructure or product-readiness.
