Google Ads data through August 2026 suggests that search behavior is shifting decisively toward longer, more conversational queries, likely influenced by LLMs, Gemini, and Google’s AI Mode.
The clearest change is in impression share. Between January 2025 and August 2026, 1–2 word queries fell from 42% of impressions to 24%, an 18-point decline. Meanwhile, 3–4 word queries rose from 33% to 48%, becoming the largest query-length segment.
The author argues this is no longer a temporary trend but a structural change in how people search. Users increasingly enter more detailed, natural-language queries instead of short keyword phrases, giving Google more context about their intent.
For advertisers, the implication is significant: traditional keyword-centric Google Ads strategies may become less effective on their own. Campaign structures, keyword targeting, ad copy, landing pages, and measurement should increasingly account for longer and more specific search behavior.
