Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, revealed that he will not rule out ads inside the platform.
He says they could be added in the future if they are done in a thoughtful and tasteful way.
For now OpenAI is focused on subscriptions. ChatGPT already has more than 20 million paying users and is projected to generate 12.7 billion dollars in revenue in 2025.
Despite that growth, the company is still losing money and does not expect to break even until 2029.
To close the gap OpenAI is exploring new revenue streams.
One option is ads. Another is commerce integration, where ChatGPT recommends products and takes a share of purchases.
Sam Altman has described the idea of ads in AI as uniquely unsettling.
But with 700 million people now using ChatGPT, the financial pressure is undeniable.
Would ads inside ChatGPT completely ruin the experience, or is it simply the next step when a product reaches this scale?
