Meta is rolling out paid “Plus” subscriptions for WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, charging separately for each app: $2.99/month for WhatsApp Plus and $3.99/month each for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus.
The paid versions are positioned as premium feature tiers, not a full paywall for the basic apps. Meta is also testing more subscriptions for businesses, creators, and Meta AI users, suggesting a broader shift from pure advertising revenue toward recurring subscription income.
The bigger point: Meta is trying to monetize the platforms people already depend on.
WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook have long been “free,” but Meta is now adding paid layers on top, and AI appears to be a major reason, given the company’s huge spending on AI infrastructure.
