Google Maps is testing a new feature called Live Updates on Android 16.
This keeps your navigation progress (like ETA and next turn) pinned on screen even if you switch apps.
Instead of standard notifications that disappear, these persistent updates make directions more glanceable and reduce distractions.
Currently, the test is limited to select Pixel and Samsung devices running the Android 16 beta, but it could roll out more widely soon.
This is another step in Android catching up with iOS’s Live Activities, and it opens new possibilities for real-time app experiences beyond navigation think ride-sharing, deliveries, or fitness tracking.
What do you think: will Live Updates make your journeys smoother, or is this just a small UX tweak?
