Ex-Google AI Pioneer: “PhDs Are a Waste of Time in the Age of AI”

Jad Tarifi, one of the founders of Google’s first generative AI team, just dropped that: advanced degrees like PhDs, law, or medicine may be becoming obsolete.

His reasoning?

– By the time you finish a 5-year PhD, AI has already leapfrogged your knowledge.
– Real-world, hands-on learning moves much faster than academia.
– Only those truly obsessed should even consider a PhD otherwise it’s “painful” and not worth it.
– The real opportunity lies in emerging niches where AI hasn’t standardized yet (like biology).
– And in the AI era, soft skills empathy, taste, and emotional intelligence are more valuable than ever.

Tarifi’s verdict: don’t waste years chasing degrees while AI rewrites the rulebook.

Move faster outside the classroom, and focus on where human skills complement machine power.
