Ads in ChatGPT

Shout-out to Juozas Kaziukėnas for uncovering how the upcoming ChatGPT ads system is shaping up.

Really interesting (and important) findings:

Ads in ChatGPT are coming, and there will be a dedicated ads settings panel.
OpenAI explicitly states that advertisers will not see chats, history, memories, personal details or IP addresses.

There will be two separate ad data buckets:

– an ads history (ads you’ve seen), and
– an interests profile (based on how you interact with ads).

Both can be deleted independently from the rest of your ChatGPT data.

Ad personalisation is optional.

If you turn it off, ads are still shown, but only contextual to the current conversation.

There is also a separate option to use past conversations / memory for ad relevance without sharing that data with advertisers.

For anyone working in ads, privacy, or product strategy: this is a rare early look at how ChatGPT plans to balance contextual ads, optional personalisation and strict data separation.

Great find, Juozas 👏
