Google Dumps Assistant for Gemini for Home

Google has announced Gemini for Home, a brand-new AI voice assistant that will replace the long-standing Google Assistant on Nest speakers and displays.

Powered by Google’s Gemini models, this is the biggest shake-up of Google’s smart home strategy in years.

The rollout begins in October 2025 through an Early Access Program, which will include both free and paid tiers.

Users will still activate devices with the familiar “Hey Google,” but Gemini for Home promises smarter reasoning, better context, and more natural conversations.

It can manage complex tasks like turning off lights in selected rooms or guiding you through cooking steps.

A key feature is Gemini Live, which allows fluid back-and-forth dialogue without repeating the wake phrase. This opens the door to richer interactions like brainstorming meals based on what’s in your fridge, troubleshooting devices, or even storytelling.

Google is also expected to unveil new Nest hardware later this year designed to highlight Gemini for Home’s advanced capabilities.

The move directly challenges Amazon’s Alexa Plus, which has already integrated generative AI into its ecosystem.
