How people are using ChatGPT — Key Insights

Based on a privacy-preserving analysis of 1.5 million conversations from consumer users, here’s what we learned about how ChatGPT is being used today:

More diverse adoption.

The gender gap has narrowed: by mid-2025, users with feminine-associated names constituted ~52%, up from ~37% in early 2024. Also, usage growth in low- and middle-income countries is now over four times that in high-income countries.

Use cases are practical.

Most conversations focus on everyday tasks: seeking information, getting guidance, writing. Writing is the most common work activity that people use ChatGPT for.

Three main modes of use.

Asking (~49%) — Questions, advice, learning.
Doing (~40%) — Creating content, drafting, coding, planning, etc.
Expressing (~11%) — Creative expression, reflection, personal or playful uses.
Work and non-work both growing.

About 30% of usage is related to work; ~70% is personal life.

Both are increasing as people discover more ways to use the tool and as its capabilities improve.
