Headlines and Descriptions are the main text elements of your Google Ads. They are what users see first and play a key role in whether someone clicks your ad or not.
They are mainly used in Search Ads, especially Responsive Search Ads (RSA).
What are Headlines?
Headlines are the short titles at the top of your ad.
They are designed to grab attention and clearly communicate your offer.
- You can add up to 15 headlines in a Responsive Search Ad
- Each headline can be up to 30 characters
- Google automatically tests different headline combinations
Examples:
- Google Ads Expert
- Increase Your ROAS
- Free PPC Audit
What are Descriptions?
Descriptions appear below the headlines and provide more detail about your product or service.
- You can add up to 4 descriptions
- Each description can be up to 90 characters
- They are used to support and expand on the message in the headlines
Examples:
- Data-driven Google Ads strategies that scale profitably
- Certified expert with proven results
Why are Headlines & Descriptions important?
Strong headlines and descriptions:
- Increase Click-Through Rate (CTR)
- Improve ad relevance and Quality Score
- Help Google’s algorithm understand your offer
- Directly impact campaign performance
Best practices
- Include keywords in headlines where possible
- Focus on benefits, not just features
- Use clear calls to action (e.g. Get Started, Request a Quote)
- Avoid repeating the same message in every headline
- Test different angles: price, value, trust, urgency
Important to know
- You can pin headlines or descriptions, but over-pinning can reduce performance
- Google chooses the best-performing combinations based on user intent
• • Performance is evaluated at the asset level, not just the ad level
