If you don’t create a new GA4 property Google will do it for you. They will use the old tag to gather data for GA4.
You can opted out for this automatic upgrade.
If you do not have GA4 it is better to implement it directly! So that you can compare data with UA.
Also if Google creates GA4 you still need to adjust some settings!
