2023 Ads Safety Report

Georgi Zayakov just sent me this morning the 2023 Ads Safety Report.

Google’s 2023 Ads Safety Report highlights a significant increase in enforcement actions, with 12.7 million advertiser accounts blocked or removed, nearly double from the previous year.

The search engine also blocked or removed 5.5 billion ads for policy violations. Despite the importance of cracking down on fraudulent accounts for brand safety and consumer confidence, there’s a potential risk associated with AI mistakenly suspending genuine advertisers and ads.

Key findings from the report include:

– Removal of millions of ads violating policies such as misrepresentation, financial services, and abuse of the ad network.
– Blocking or restricting ads from serving on billions of publisher pages and taking site-level enforcement action on hundreds of thousands of sites.
– Deployment of 31 updates to Ads and Publisher policies to counter rising scams and fraud.

Google emphasizes the role of AI in combating bad actors, citing its ability to identify and suspend fraudulent accounts proactively.

Looking ahead, Google plans to continue investing in policy, detection, and enforcement.

Advertisers have the option to appeal enforcement actions if they disagree with Google’s decisions. VP & GM of Ads Privacy and Safety, Duncan Lennox, underscores the importance of AI in enhancing enforcement efforts across all fronts.
